It's been frequently said that dipping into old magic books is a great way to discover strong material that's been hidden in plain view. Imagine the surprise of opening Magic as a Hobby and finding described the basic method for a very popular trick that has been selling for a healthy price in magic stores recently. The Peek Deck, allows the spectator to peek at a card, which instantly disappears from the deck and then is pulled from the magician's pocket. This book is filled with excellent magic. The title is somewhat misleading as almost all the items described could be used professionally. There is Paul Curry's rope trick "Linked," for example; a method for producing a vanished, signed coin from inside an egg, inside an orange, inside a grapefruit (the method is by Orson Welles, by the way); a chapter with great mentalism ideas; and the fabulous illusion of Bertram the rising snake.
